Uzbekistan is a country in Central Asia that was once part of the Soviet Union. It is known for its mosques, mausoleums, and structures built along the Great Silk Road - an ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean. The city of Samarkand, which was an important stop on this route, gained worldwide fame thanks to the Registan Square, which is surrounded by three ornately decorated madrasas (Muslim educational institutions) built in the 15th and 17th centuries.
